In the vibrant music scene of Birmingham, UK, an artist known simply as Carvalho is making waves with his unique fusion of Neo-Soul, reggae, Afrobeat, and jazz. Born Rob Carvalho, he’s built a career on an unshakable foundation of passion, discipline, and a belief in the boundless nature of music. Since 2013, Carvalho’s journey as an independent artist has been marked by creative exploration and a dedication to the art of composition.

Growing up in Birmingham, Carvalho’s love for music was cultivated early on. Immersed in a city known for its cultural diversity and musical heritage, he found himself drawn to the art of composition. “I love composition because once you understand the rudiments of music, your expression should be boundless,” he says. This philosophy has been a guiding light for Carvalho, propelling him to explore music’s many forms and possibilities.

Although he didn’t start producing his own music until 2013, Carvalho had already spent years performing as a bassist in various bands. His musical roots run deep, with experience in genres as varied as indie pop and jazz. Reflecting on these formative years, Carvalho shares, “Playing in bands was a learning journey. It helped me develop a keen ear for the nuances of different styles, which I now bring into my own work.”

One pivotal influence on Carvalho’s career has been Ronnie McQueen, former bassist for Steel Pulse, a legendary reggae band also from Birmingham. With a Grammy to their name and extensive tours around the world, Steel Pulse has been a symbol of Birmingham’s musical excellence. Under McQueen’s mentorship, Carvalho found invaluable guidance in navigating both the creative and business aspects of the music industry. This support helped him gain confidence and clarity in a field known for its challenges.

For those considering a career in music, Carvalho’s advice is simple but heartfelt: “Do it because you love it, because this industry can be shallow and remember the real reasons why you do music.” He encourages young musicians to stay true to their passion, especially when facing setbacks. “It’s easy to get caught up in trends, but lasting fulfillment comes from staying authentic,” he adds, reflecting his own commitment to creating music that resonates deeply with listeners.

Carvalho’s sound is unmistakable. Though he primarily identifies with Neo-Soul, his music is a tapestry of influences, pulling from reggae’s earthy grooves, Afrobeat’s rhythmic pulse, and the improvisational spirit of jazz. “Music shouldn’t be limited,” he explains. “I aim to capture emotion and connection, and different genres let me express that in unique ways.” This genre-bending approach has won Carvalho a growing fanbase, drawn to his ability to blend genres seamlessly into a cohesive sound.

Carvalho’s work with his label, Versify Music, has produced an impressive discography. He’s released five albums: All the Things You Know to Be True?, Watermelon Smiles, Apocalyptic Son, Apocalyptic Sun, and Home is Closer, the latter set to debut on November 18, 2024. His latest EP, Keep It Out, released on October 13, 2024, adds to an already diverse portfolio, which also includes earlier EPs like Hope’s Journey and Elevate.

Beyond his solo albums, Carvalho has embarked on international collaborations, particularly with producers in South Africa and Brazil. His work with Miza, a prominent producer from South Africa, and Grooveland Brazil, based in São Paulo, has brought fresh perspectives to his music, expanding his sound and appeal. “Working with producers from different cultures has been eye-opening. Each brings their own musical flavor, and that’s a gift to my sound,” Carvalho notes. These collaborations underscore his belief in music as a universal language.

For Carvalho, success isn’t measured by commercial metrics but by personal fulfillment. “I’m already successful as I’m allowed to create and express myself freely,” he shares. For him, the ability to make music that’s true to his vision is the ultimate reward. “Sure, awards and recognition are great, but they’re secondary. I want to continue creating music and, ultimately, get my band together to share this experience with an audience.”

His definition of success also reflects his resilience. “Giving up isn’t an option,” he asserts, a statement that reveals his commitment to overcoming the industry’s inevitable hurdles. As an independent artist, Carvalho has learned to navigate these challenges with patience and determination, finding solace in the journey itself.

As Carvalho’s influence continues to grow, his vision for the future is both ambitious and heartfelt. He hopes to bring his band together for live performances, connecting with audiences on a more personal level. “Playing live is about creating a shared experience,” he says. “There’s something powerful in seeing people respond to the music, feeling those emotions together.”

Looking ahead, Carvalho remains focused on creating music that speaks to listeners across genres and backgrounds. With each new release, he continues to build on his unique sound and vision, infusing his music with a depth and authenticity that’s rare in today’s industry. Whether through soulful melodies or rhythmic Afrobeat elements, Carvalho’s music is a celebration of creativity, resilience, and the beauty of boundless expression.

In an industry often focused on quick fame, Carvalho’s journey reminds us of the rewards that come from true passion and dedication. As he brings Birmingham’s rich musical legacy into the future, Carvalho proves that success in music is not just about reaching the top but about finding joy and meaning in every note.
